GEM: Children’s Ministry
The Children’s Ministry at Saint Mark is an inclusive, growing ministry which offers many opportunities to volunteer. Short term, long term, big commitment or small, we are open to those who would help our children grow in spiritual understanding and faith.
Serve on Children’s Council
The Children’s Council plans and creates the overview for the Children’s Ministry.
Sunday School Volunteers
Nursery Volunteers You can sign up for one Sunday a month, or one Sunday a year to work with our paid Nursery Caregivers in caring for our infants, toddlers, and preschoolers during worship services.
Classroom Teachers and Helpers
We offer classes for children from 2 years old to 5th grade. Opportunities in this area are for teachers (weekly or two times a month commitment) and helpers (weekly to a few times a year). We need people to help us gather supplies for lessons, people to help lead classes on a weekly or every other week basis, substitutes who can serve as needed, and resource people to present lessons and programs on an occasional basis.
Family Fellowship Lunch
On the second Sunday of each month, we offer an informal lunch for anyone in the St. Mark family, but especially for families with children. The cost is $7 for each adult and $5 for each child (5 and older); there is no charge for children 4 and younger. This is a low-key time for meeting and socializing with other families. The lunch usually is followed by the Children’s Council meeting, and some craft or activity for the children. Volunteers are needed to help supervise the children’s activity while the Council is in session.
Special Event Volunteer
These opportunities are some of the most fun! We always need volunteers to help plan and put together these events as well as staff booths, set up, and break down. This is a great way to see and meet new folks as well as get to know the children and parents. Some of the events (detailed below) are the Easter Egg Hunt, Children’s Sabbath worship service, Christmas pageant and other Christmas activities, Vacation Bible School, Fall Festival, Christian Education Sunday, and any other ideas that our Children’s Council and parents might dream up!
- Easter Egg Hunt
We will need people to help with snacks, egg-stuffing, egg hiding, crafts & face-painting, crowd control, etc.
- Children’s Sabbath Worship Service
Held on the second or third Sunday in October, this is a service especially designed to inform the congregation about and to solicit support for children’s advocacy issues, both on a local and a national level. The service is planned with children in mind, from the hymns to the sermon. Children also are encouraged to take leadership roles in the service.
- Family Christmas Eve Service
This service is held at 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve and is a special time for us to celebrate our children and the birthday of Jesus. We need people to help us plan the program and organize children who are participating.
- Vacation Bible School
This program is held for one week in June and serves as a time of celebration for our children and leaders as well as an outreach into our community. We need all kinds of helpers for this including decorators, registration support.
- Fall Festival
This event is held late September or early October. We need people to help with food, activities, crowd control, etc.
- Christian Education Sunday
The first Sunday after Labor Day, we move our kids up to their new classes and celebrate a time of new beginnings. This is also the time we register children for the new year. We need people to help us with registration, picture taking, snacks, etc.
