Rustin-Lorde Breakfast

Diversity & Social JusticeSaint Mark hosts the 2010 Bayard Rustin-Audre Lorde Breakfast on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Bayard Rustin (1912-1987) was a black gay civil rights activist and organizer of Martin Luther King Jr's famous march on Washington. Audre Lorde (1934-1992) was a black lesbian, mother, warrior, and poet. The 2010 Atlanta Bayard Rustin-Audre Lorde Breakfast will be held on Monday, January 18, 10am, in Wade Hall. The breakfast was founded in 2002 to achieve the following goals:(1) to provide LGBTQ people, people of color and progressive allies the opportunity to fellowship before participating in the Martin Luther King Jr March; (2) to educate communities about the life and contributions of Bayard Rustin, Audre Lorde and other activists; and (3) to enhance mutual support and continued learning among participants engaged in social justice work. Every year, a diverse assembly of attendees convene at this landmark to enjoy good food and friendly company in the spirit of building progressive community.

The breakfast will conclude prior to the annual MLK March & Rally, 1-4 pm. The March is held on Auburn Avenue from Peachtree Street to Jackson Street. The Rally is held on Auburn Avenue in the King National Park Area. Breakfast sponsors include Bridge Catering, Radial Café, Positive Impact, Starbucks, and the Atlanta Black LGBT Coalition. For more information, please contact Rev. Josh Noblitt.

New Member Class Coming Soon!

You Don't Know What You've Got Till It's Gone

That's from an old song, but it certainly holds truth today. For example, last week Saint Mark's church offices were without computers for three days. While we were able to take care of some non-computer chores, but were at a stand-still in other areas. Worse yet, for about 24 hours some our your email was lost in cyber-space. Many of you were making your 2010 Estimate of Giving online at same time. We MAY not have received notification of that, and, therefore, may not have made the appropriate notes to your financial records. If you made an online Estimate of Giving on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday of last week (January 6,7,8), please contact Deana Hilton, 404.873.2636 x14, in the church financial office to confirm receipt of your generous pledge. We apologize for any inconvenience. Technology is a wonderful thing ... when it works.

Administrative Council News

Our first meeting for 2010 has been scheduled for Saturday, January 23, 9am to 1pm, in Room 111. During this meeting, we will do some team building and discuss our plans for 2010.

The first part of the meeting will also include a called Charge Conference with our District Superintendent DeDe Leetch presiding over our meeting. The purpose of the conference is to vote to approve Tiffany Kromer as a candidate for ordained ministry and to consider possibly reducing a ministerial salary in an effort to help with 2010 budget needs.

Regular 2010 Administrative Council meetings are scheduled on Monday evenings March 22, May 24, July 26, September 27, and November 22 in room 111 beginning at 6:45pm and following dinner at 6pm.

Budget Update

More information about our 2010 church budget will be announced after the upcoming Administrative Council meeting on January 23, when our new budget will be finalized. Please keep Saint Mark, our ministries, and those individuals and committees's who are involved with these critical decisions in your prayers.

Open Doors Ambassadors Needed

Volunteer opportunities are also available for anyone interested in serving as an ambassador to welcome visitors during Open Doors, Saint Mark’s weekly open house for our midtown neighbors and the community at large, continues to be offered every Saturday from 11:30 am to 1 pm. Training will be provided, although the primary responsibility is just to provide a friendly welcome to Saint Mark. If you are available on a Saturday morning and would like to serve as an ambassador, and/or if you would like to join the planning committee, please contact Ellen Lail or Brian Frey.

There is a fee for the course, and Saint Mark will provide partial scholarships for participants. The course schedule will be determined by the participants. All are welcome! For more information, contact Jimmy Moor, 404-873-2636 x11.

Communion Servers Needed

Julie Arms is our new coordinator for Communion servers, and she is seeking servers for our Communion services during Morning Worship on the first Sunday of each month. Whether you have served in the past or if you have never served before, if you would like to participate in this meaningful part of our United Methodist life, please contact Julie Arms.

Upcoming Food for the Hungry Soul Short-Term Classes!

Mission Opportunities

Outreach Donations

A sincere “thank you” to everyone who has made a recent clothing / toiletry donation to our Outreach closet! Thanks to your generosity, we now have an overabundance of toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc)! Please contact Rev. Phillip Thomason prior to dropping off any further similar donations. We are still accepting coats, jackets, mittens, hats, etc. though since our coat drive continues through the end of the month.

The Coat Drive Continues

Our coat drive continues through January. Many of us get new coats this time of year—please remember to pass your old one along to keep someone else warm this winter. The coats will benefit Saint Mark's outreach ministry and Atlanta's Task Force for the Homeless. Contact Rev. Phillip Thomason for more details. Thank you for your support!

Listen Now or Listen Later

Did you miss the worship service last week? Did you hear a sermon recently that you found especially meaningful? Is there a service that you would like for a friend to experience? Saint Mark has always had CD recordings of the 11:45 morning worship service available for purchase. Now our recent services are available online at no cost to you. You can Listen Now which let's you listen to the service online. You can Listen Later which let's you download the service and listen anytime on any MP3 player.
