A suggested reading plan for the Gospel of Luke will also be included in the devotional. Topics will include evil, religion and science, other religions, evangelism and tolerance, and the God of the Old Testament. Join us for as many sessions as you can (each session is an independent lesson). The day marks the beginning of the Lenten season, the time we journey on the road with Jesus to Calvary, the empty tomb, and all that is to follow. Lent historically has been a time of reflection and of restoration. It was the culmination of preparation of candidates for baptism, which took place on Easter, and a time when persons who had been disciplined by the church were made ready for restoration into full fellowship. And historically it has been a time of disciplines of various sorts. We often speak of giving something up for Lent, and that can be a rich path toward a deeper relationship with God if it is done carefully and prayerfully. If you decide to fast (a practice strongly encouraged by John Wesley), be sure you know how to approach that practice. One good guide is in Richard Foster’s A Celebration of Discipline. Use the time you would have spent in eating for prayer and meditation and becoming aware of all the people who are hungry every day. Use the money you would have spent on eating for a charitable cause. It can be a powerful discipline. Others may want to give up something important in their life such as a favorite TV show or time on Facebook! Again, the time gained can be used for prayer or visiting a sick friend. My friend and mentor Bill Landiss used to suggest that people give up something like a grudge or gossip. That would make for a memorable Lent for many of us. It is very common now to speak of taking on something for Lent, and that is an excellent path for the season. If you have been struggling with your devotional life, as we all do at times, what better time than now to begin that practice. Our guide for reading Luke during this season is a wonderful starting point. Add to that daily reading five to ten minutes of prayer time and you are on your way. Maybe you take on some reading that will push you to grow in your faith. Books that have spoken to me recently include A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller; An Altar in the World by Barbara Brown Taylor; and A People’s History of Christianity by Dianna Butler Bass. Or maybe this is the season when you take on restoring that broken relationship with a friend or family member. Or you take on a new practice – like tutoring a child or visiting a prisoner – that may take you places you never imagined. Lent is a challenging season because it calls us to look closely at who we are. It is a hopeful season because it calls us to look closely at who God is. I pray the practices of this season will draw us all closer to God and one another. Feel free to talk with any of your pastors if you want to discuss options for the season in more detail. Blessings, Jimmy Click here for a complete listing of Lenten events, resources, and opportunities at Saint Mark. |
