Acceptance of Diversity Award 2010

Derrick Martin & Vandy Beth GlennDerrick Martin and Vandy Beth Glenn receive Diversity Award

For the first time in the 13 year history of presenting the Saint Mark Acceptance of Diversity Award, two awards were presented this year.

Derrick Martin, the high school senior from Cochran, Georgia, who received permission from his school board to bring his boyfriend to his senior prom was one of the recipients. Derrick gained the right to go to the prom, but lost his parents, who cast him out of their home. Derrick gained the support and admiration of countless thousands of people around the nation and as a freshman at Georgia Southern University has begun a national nonprofit helpline for LGBT youth in crisis, ProjectLifevest.org.

The second recipient is Vandy Beth Glenn, a transgendered woman, who was fired from her position as an editor with the Georgia Legislature because of her transgendered status, but who sued to get her job back, and won the case in July of this year.

Congratulations to both of our 2010 Diversity Award recipients.
