Habitat for Humanity 2011

Habitat for Humanity is a home building ministry through which church and trade professionals volunteer build a home for a qualifying family who is otherwise unable to have a home. The qualifying family also participates in building (if able) and pays a portion of the mortgage each month.

Beginning on Saturday, August 20, volunteers from Saint Mark will partner with volunteers from Radcliffe Presbyterian Church, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, First Presbyterian Church, and the Parsons Foundation to build a new, environmentally-friendly Habitat house here in Atlanta for a new homeowner and family. Construction of the house will occur on seven Saturdays (August 20 and 27; September 10, 17 and 24; October 1 and 8). The work day begins at 8 am and ends about 4 pm. Lunch is furnished on site as are all needed tools. No skill or construction experience is required.

For many years, Saint Mark has joined with neighboring Midtown churches AND a deserving family to build a Habitat home for that family. Once again, Saint Mark has an opportunity to work with Habitat for Humanity this summer on a 7 week build (every Saturday from August 20 through October 8).

No prior experience is necessary; there's something for everyone!

Day 1 - August 20

• Build exterior and interior walls in warehouse
• Clear crawlspace
• Set floor joists and lay floor decking
• Sheath wall panels and install exterior walls
• Install interior walls
• Tie walls together, straighten and brace
• Install front porch deck, columns, and beams
• Provide lunch

Day 2 - August 27

• Prep and install roof trusses
• Install windows and trim packages
• Install interior framing – wind bracing, deadwood, attic stairs
• Deck and felt roof
• Install sub-fascia, barge rafters and drip edge
• Build side porch and ramp
• Install exterior trim and set-up for siding
• Begin siding

Day 5 - September 17

• Provide lunch
